THE HARMONISERS AND CARITAS DECEMBER
2010
Caritas is a national Spanish charity run through the
Catholic church and has centres in most towns. Its main
aim is to help the needy and poverty stricken residents
in conjunction with social services.
The head of Rojales church, Father Virgilio Santonia Vila was
delighted to accept the boxes and bags full of goodies
from Tony Wagstaff, chairman of the
Torrevieja
Barbershop Harmonisers.
Several members of the Torrevieja Barbershop
Harmonisers went on a Christmas shopping spree with a
difference last Thursday. Armed with 700 euros raised at
recent performances, the group shopped till they
dropped at a local supermarket and filled five cars with
a range of goods and foods which they then took to
Caritas in Rojales.
This included: rice, baby food,
powdered baby milk, flour, lentils, packet soup, pasta,
cooking oil, baby shampoo, coco powder, washing powder
and disinfectant.
The items will be used for the benefit
of needy families within the borough either by specific
donation or by providing a meal at the centres open
morning on Sunday´s.
Following the donation to Caritas, the representatives
of the Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers were invited to
attend Rojales Town Hall where the Mayor Antonio Canovas.
and councillor for culture Silvia Pizarro acknowledged
the on-going commitment of the group, and the
contributions they make especially over the last two
years during the tough times of the economic crisis.
